On 2 June 2012, the submarine USS Mississippi (SSN-782) was commissioned by the US Navy in Pascagoula, Mississippi at Huntington Ingalls Industries. During WWII, Ingalls Shipyard built over 60 vessels including 2 aircraft carriers.

SSN-782 is the fifth Naval vessel to bear the name USS Mississippi; the first was a frigate lost in the Civil War. The third USS Mississippi (BB-41) served extensively in the Pacific in World War II, earning eight battle stars for her actions.
