Museum Uses Monopoly to Teach WWII Lessons

The National WWII Museum mission is to tell the story of the American Experience in the war that changed the world — why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today — so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn. But this doesn’t mean we can’t also have a little fun along the way!

In our most creative educational outreach to date, the Museum has developed a WWII version of the popular family game, Monopoly. “America’s World War II: We’re All in This Together” uses the well-known Monopoly format to introduce families and young people to America’s involvement in the war.

The inspiration for “America’s World War II: We’re All in This Together” came from a 9th grade history class at Salmen High School in Slidell, LA. Teacher Kevin Boone wanted to find a creative, engaging way to interest his students in history. This got us thinking.

Our game contains basic factual information about the war and spotlights some lesser-known facets. As with any subject, the best learning comes in the guise of having fun. The Museum believes that students will be entranced by the game, using it as a jumping off point for their own historical explorations!

Through this game, the Museum will re-engage young people with this pivotal time in our country’s history.  Re-engagement is needed. As WWII recedes in history, it has become increasingly difficult for young people to develop a personal connection to the war years. And connection is the key to caring.

With the launch of “America’s World War II: We’re All in This Together,” we hope families will share personal time gathered together around the game. At the same time, we hope the game provides a setting for adults to share why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today – and to honor those family members who were engaged in the effort.

In “America’s World War II: We’re All in This Together,” icons like the top hat, race car and dog are replaced with a B-17, combat boots, "Higgins Boat," M-1 helmet, cathedral radio and Sherman tank.
